Instrument & Controls Designer

R&W is seeking a full-time control system designer in our Beaverton, Oregon office.  This role requires the ability to learn, develop, and apply experience and knowledge of control system hardware and software to industrial and municipal projects of various types, sizes, and scope.  Projects generally require the ability to understand and implement design criteria for PLC and HMI systems electrical, control power distribution, and/or instrumentation & controls.  Ideal candidates will be self-motivated, capable of taking ownership of projects, and able to effectively communicate with other disciplines and clients.  They would also have the aptitude to learn and assist with the development of PLC/HMI/SCADA system designs and programming.

Requirements:

  • Ability to effectively research information on controls, instrumentation, and PLC hardware.
  • Experience in programming of at least one type of PLC including Allen Bradley, GE, Siemens, etc.
  • Experience in HMI programming packages such as RSView32, Ignition, AVEVA/Wonderware, etc.
  • Ability to interpret and develop P&IDs.
  • Three or more years or more experience in electrical and/or integration & controls (I&C) consulting field.
  • Ability to understand and develop control panel layout drawings, bills of materials, and wiring drawings.
  • Ability to multi-task and address needs of multiple projects concurrently. 
  • Ability to travel to project sites. The estimated percentage of time spent traveling is 20%.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, coworkers, and clients.
  • Knowledge and use of MS Office products, specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience using Bluebeam or similar PDF editing software.
  • Capable of making project design decisions relative to client design direction with general or minimal input from a project manager or other senior level staff.
  • Associates of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field from an ABET accredited program.

Preferences:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field from an ABET accredited program.
  • Controls commissioning or troubleshooting experience.
  • Understanding and experience with application of the National Electric Code (NEC).

Job duties may include:

  • Project site visits, including data collection and analysis of control systems for design and/or system evaluations.
  • Work and communicate with clients, project owners/managers, and contractors.
  • Work and communicate with internal design team members and project managers.
  • Development of control system documentation including functional descriptions, I/O Lists, and Bills of Materials.
  • Develop control schematics, control panel layouts, and network diagrams.
  • Write and review instrumentation and control system specifications.
  • Write technical reports for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • On-site and remote commissioning and support of customer control systems.
